The Soundgarden 1990 (Spinmasters in the area)

Any ex-Soundgarden heads in here? Small as f***, desperate for air-conditioning with condensation running down the walls and dripping from the ceiling, but a top atmosphere and top tunes from our very own Darren and Andrew.

Short lived too. My abiding memory is of the police doing one of their walk through checks while Total Confusion (Homeboy, Hippy & a Funky Dread) was playing, with the whole club chanting the "whoo, whoo, whoo , whoo" bit and pointing at the dibble.

Good while it lasted, just like Solstice 91 at The Academy. i feel like an old git at 28 posting this.

This reminds me of an article I read in the Rolling Stone magazine about the Manchester scene back in the early 90's, it seems you guys had lots
of police raids at the clubs, gang wars, there was this one club where a gang attacked people with machetes, the article
also went on about how the clubs were racially divided, there was lots of racial tension between the black and white clubs and
how drugs were destroying the scene, I never knew England could be so rough.

i didnt see any racism in the clubs up north,it was just about the dance in 88/89

The article was about the post Summer of Love era around 1990-1991, it was basically saying how drugs helped ignite the
scene it destroyed the scene because people were into heavier drugs, you had problem's with gangs, drug lords stuff like that.
It went on about this one dealer people were too afraid to say his name who used to frequent the Hacienda, when he lost his
temper he would wreck the place and nobody would do anything, he was eventually shot by one of his cronies.

yeah, I remember The soundgarden, (+ Konspiracy,- never went to Akademy though. ) Konspiracy had a lot of gang trouble as I can remember

Remember looking for the ladies room in Soundgarden, and walked through the wrong door, and smack bang into the 808 lads who were djing in the back room - ha ha!

Anyone remember 'The Thunderdome' - proper dodgy place, or ' The House' (Jay Wearden)

Found a brilliant mix from 'The Thunderdome' (Spinmasters June 89)
and some other old - skool stuff @

Does anyone know how to record this straight onto CD? I have Pro Tools LE that comes with a digidesign programme for burning and recording but can't see or rather don't know how to put these mixes onto cd.

I also have Real Player (free version) but see no 'record' option.

Any help or tips on a programme to get so i can do this is appreciated

The same lad has a download available of the Channel 4's 1990 show "Ibiza. a short film about chilling" for anyone with broadband. That, sadly, doesn't include me, but, if I remember rightly, it has Graham talking on it and 808 do In Yer Face. (I think you may have to register)

He also says he will have the 'Madchester' documentary, also from 1990, which, as I remember, features the Spinmasters, MC Tunes and also has A Guy called Gerald visiting Detroit and comparing the industrial landscape to Manchester and discussing how it influences the creation of techno sounds.

The Soundgarden was indeed one of the better clubs in Manchester, at that time.

Spinmasters always played the best music, many a night I had in there hearing out the tracks they'd play on their shows.

Fave tracks played out in the club were always;

Voodoo Child - Voodoo Child
Ya Ya's - Looove (which they used to call 'nish')
Kamera - Back In The Time
Pako - Pakito Lindo

And of course they'd end it usually with Dr Alban's - No Coke (how good did that bassline sound on a decent system!)

The nights were improved greatly when they'd hired an industrial fan, set up near the fire exit, when that was fired up, it was heaven, as normally it was roasting in there all the time.

I'd say this was on a par with my all time fave club, The Academy - that was amazing, perfect for clubbing (IMO) as it was huge and flat, big open space was all you needed to stomp round to, and their Solstice (think that was the night) nights were always good, a great mix of Belgian techno and then in the last hour, the piano anthems, such as K-Klass - Rhythm Is A Mystery (Remix) - when that was mixed in, you knew it was coming, and could tell looking round that others knew as well

Anyone remember 'The Banshee' - think that was on Oxford Road, mix factory used to do that, it had two floors and there was a long haired fella who used to work in Spin Inn for a while along with Mark (XTC) and Paul 'budgie' Walker, who'd play all yer piano faves upstairs, such as Expose - Tell Me Why, Last Rhythm - Last Rhythm (Vocal Remix) whilst downstairs you could hear XTC cutting up Total Confusion (some of his best cutting that) over some tasty tracks like Lost - The Gonzo & Silver Bullet - 21 Seconds...

Happy days...
