mine would have to be one in ten from Gorgeous because I often tend to skip it. Dunno, never got into it...

You should try the Forceable Lobotomy Mix of One in Ten it's much better, a little harder to get hold of though.

And I have to say that Black Morpheus from Gorgeous is a great tune, ideal for a good chillin' out!

I must admit whilst I like Black Morpheous, I actually prefer Southern Cross.

I like almost all of 808 States tunes, having been into them since 1989. There are little or none that I could slate or put down really as all have their own character even if they are below what is the normal 808 standard.

If I have to name a couple that I prefer not to listen too that often then this is it:-

Bombadin, Balboa, Banacheq, Compulsion & a couple of others of Newbuild.

Favorite Tracks, well that would have to start with Pacific. The list for this is unbounding, but im sure you can imagine.

The Only Rhyme That Bites was by MC Tunes so it is only a crap 808 tune if you don't like the music as opposed to Tunes rapping. It's a good track and should have led to far greater things for MC Tunes.

have to say i think the point has been missed totally with regard to 'newbuild'. setting it in context, it is an early acid album, which was so very ahead of its time (at the time...jan. '88), using machines (808, 909,303) to create sounds rather than computers as today. inevitably, their sound was going to move in different directions. listening to it now, it totally reflects that era, and the innovation that was around at the time. as richard hector-jones comments, it is "profoundly f*cked up" and "genuinely lysergic".
....as for worst 808 tune...hmmmmm...yeah have to go with 'sexy dancer' too.

Depends what you mean by 'emotion' - just because tracks are more 'musical' with flutes, sax and ethereal strings/pads, doesn't mean that other styles of track do not automatically qualify as being emotional. Newbuild, to me, is all about a sense of futurism and discovery, which bring feelings of optimism and the possiblity that anything can happen. Let's not forget the raw hypnotic energy of tracks like Flow Coma which ripped up dancefloors and warehouses at the time, and paved the way for a plethora of new sounds, styles and ideas.

Pacific, Sunrise, Olympic are also some of my favourite 808 cuts, (Pacific to me is also quite acid-tinged with the squelching bass on 202 as is the 'Flutey mix' of Olympic) so the progressions are there to be seen - OK so Newbuild sounds basic in comparison to other more advanced 808 productions, but that's missing the point entirely; this album has become a snapshot in time of what three producers thought the future of music might be, using only the most basic ingredients at a time of 80's excess and over-production in music...maybe more imortantly bringing the ability to create this stuff closer to the masses - we all know the outcome!

i haven't heard a complete 808 album since gorgeous (808:88:98 excepted), so i'm not well versed in what they've been up to since – could someone please update the discography? but based on what i have heard, i'd have to vote for the dreadful europa as my least favourite. there's no space in it and the vocal is horribly cloying. it's so syrupy that it makes me feel physically sick. contrique ain't up to much either – the claustrophobic production style of peter hook's bassline just doesn't match up with 808 cleanliness. to me, a sample should be made to fit in with the track it's been sampled for, and i think 808 were a bit overambitious with that one. okay, rant over.

nah europa holds a place in my heart...like its spooky start and the
vocals. ain't got a clue what caroline seaman's actually singing though!
everytime i listen to that album it just takes me back to 92-93.
always hard to be objective when an album has that effect on u!

(PS: is there any discography of 808 mixes of other artists? also, should the current discography include 808 tracks on compilations? one of my own favourite tracks, "mondonet", appears on one of the early trance europe express albums, and i think it's sorely overlooked. anyone else into this one?)
