BANGIN' REASONS AS TO WITHOUT WHICH MANCHESTER WOULDN'T EXIST

By Dave Simpson

GRAHAM MASSEY (808 STATE) Job: boffin

ANOTHER significant mover in the early House scene, the former Biting Tongues avant-garde jazzster led 808 State - named after a drum machine - to make 1988's New Build, the UK's first true Acid House album. 808's subsequent achievements included the seminal 1989 hit, "Pacific State", a triumphant gig at Manchester's G-Mex and work with Björk, Bernard Sumner and Manic James Dean Bradfield. Their recent break with Warners may give them a new lease of life.

Current whereabouts: Manchester, where Massey is remixing New Build with the Aphex Twin and other House/bleep suspects.
